The wire stuffing box is the main barrier during wireline operations and is used in well kill operations. The stuffing box consists of a stuffing chamber with an external nut or hydraulic chamber. The Stuffing Box provides a swivel bracket and pulley to guide the cable through the stuffing chamber. The radius of the Stuffing Box pulleys can be interchanged to accept larger pulleys to accommodate larger cable sizes.
The packing energizes and creates an effective seal around the cable and prevents well pressure from escaping. The packing is energized by tightening the nuts on the"manual"stuffing box or by applying hydraulic pressure to the"hydraulic"stuffing box. Hydraulic stuffing boxes can be remotely operated and are generally used. The pressure required to affect the seal will be variable and also minimized. Excessive force can prematurely wear the gland packing or cause the packing to become too tight to move the cable.
The stuffing box contains an integrated plunger (blowout stopper or internal blowout preventer) that contains the cable passage. If the cable detaches and is ejected from the well, the integrated plunger is forced up against the bottom of the packing chamber and seals against the well pressure
